How can you adjust a cane to the right height?

  • When standing, place your cane on the side opposite of the injured side or weaker side of the body.
  • When holding the cane, the cane should come to your hip bone on the side of your upper thigh.
  • When holding your cane, your elbow should be bent at about 20 degrees.
  • The easiest way to find the right height? While holding your cane, the top of the cane should be at wrist level, when your arm is hanging comfortably on your side.

How can you adjust a walker to the right height?

  • First, stand inside your walker.
  • With both your hands on the grips, your elbows should have a 15 degree bend.
  • When standing inside of your walker, place one or both arms loosely by your side. The top of the grip of your walker should be level with the crease inside your wrist.

Although these are great ways to verify that your walker or cane is at a good height for increased safety and improved body mechanics, the best option is to speak to a physical therapist! A physical therapist can properly assess what assistive device is the best option for you and identify the proper height/size of the assistive device.
