Frequently Asked Questions
Women's Health
What is pelvic health therapy for women?
Physical therapy focused on the muscles and tissues in the pelvic area to treat conditions like bladder incontinence, bowel incontinence, pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, increased urgency, postpartum recovery, symptoms associated with pregnancy, and constipation.
What does a pelvic health physical therapist do?
They assess your hips, back, pelvis, the function of your pelvic floor muscles, identify imbalances, and provide tailored exercises, education, and hands-on techniques to improve pelvic health.
Can pelvic health therapy help during pregnancy?
Yes! It can help manage back pain, pelvic pain, “lightning crotch,” incontinence, and prepare your body for childbirth.
When should I start postpartum pelvic health therapy?
Therapy can begin as early as 2 weeks postpartum to address issues like diastasis recti, incontinence, heaviness/pressure, or pelvic pain.
Can pelvic health therapy help with C-section recovery?
Absolutely. It can address scar tissue, core strength, and pelvic floor function impacted by the surgery. PT should be standard recovery after a c-section!
Does menopause affect pelvic health?
Yes, hormonal changes during menopause can lead to pelvic floor issues, vaginal dryness, and incontinence, which therapy can help address.
Can pelvic health therapy help with urinary leakage as I age?
Yes! It doesn’t matter if you have had incontinence for a few months or 10 years, pelvic health therapy can help.
Can pelvic health therapy help with painful intercourse?
Yes, it can address muscle tension, improve blood flow, and teach relaxation techniques to reduce pain during intercourse.
Why do I feel pelvic pain, and can therapy help?
Pelvic pain can stem from muscle tightness, scar tissue, or conditions like endometriosis. Therapy focuses on identifying the cause and reducing discomfort.
What is pelvic organ prolapse, and can therapy help?
Prolapse occurs when pelvic organs drop due to weakened muscles and is typically described as “heaviness or pressure”. Therapy can help identify the issues and then provide strategies to manage symptoms.
Is it normal to leak urine when I cough, sneeze, or exercise?
No, it’s common but not normal. Therapy can help identifiy the issue whether it is weak pelvic floor muscles, poor pressure management, tight pelvic floor muscles, poor coordination and recruitment of the pelvic floor muscles that is causing the incontinence.
What should I expect during my first session?
Your therapist will review your medical history, discuss your symptoms, and perform an assessment to create a personalized treatment plan.
Do I have to do internal exams or treatments?
Internal assessments are often helpful but not required. Your therapist will explain the process and only proceed with your consent.
How long does it take to see results?
Many women notice improvements within a few weeks, but consistency with therapy is key for long-term results.
I was just cleared by my doctor at 6 weeks postartum to return to normal activity-should I jump into running immediatley or lifting heavy weights?
Although many would prefer to jump right into previous levels of activity, it is important to see a pelvic health PT and let them help guide you with proper strenthening and return to running or lifting to help manage symptoms you may be experiencing postpartum or to avoid causing potential symptoms from jumping back into activity too soon.
