Today Is National Pancake Day What Are Healthy Breakfast Choices For Older Adults – In-Home Therapy

Sep 26, 2022 | Specialty

As we age, our appetites may decrease, dietary requirements may change, we may have different dental problems, or increased difficulty with shopping. (Donnelly, 2022) Even though as older adults, we may experience one or all of these changes, it still is important to get good nutrition! Here are some healthy breakfast choices, for older adults:

– Eggs

– Weetabix

– Yogurt, fruit, granola

– Oats and berries

– Avocado toast

(Donnelly, 2022)

– Oatmeal

– Whole grain waffles or toast

– Smoothies with low sugar ingredients and include fresh greens, such as spinach or kale

(Companions For Seniors, 2020)

To increase older adults intake of a healthy breakfast, try these tips:

– Meal prep ahead of time

– Write down a menu

– Include friends or family during meal times

– Set a breakfast/morning routine

– Start with a large glass of water

(Companions For Seniors, 2020)

Also, place food and utensils/cooking items, at reachable levels. Place pot holders and towels within reach. Clear any clutter to decrease difficulty with meal prep and to decrease fall risks. If you or your loved one has difficulty utilizing certain utensils, talk with an occupational therapist or find adaptive equipment for kitchen tools, to help increase safety and independence in the kitchen!
