Today is World Mental Health Day – In-Home Therapy Community Article By Kara Welke

Before the pandemic started in 2019, there were already about 1 in 8 people who were living with a mental disorder. Services, funding, and skills for mental health are low in supply, especially for low and middle class individuals. Anxiety and depressive disorders have risen 25% within the 1st year of the pandemic.  (World Health Organization, n.d.)

World Mental Health Day is about bringing awareness to mental health, so the full spectrum of the needs of mental health is met, with a community based network that is affordable, accessible, and provides quality services. (World Health Organization, n.d.)

The stigma of someone having a mental health disorder is a barrier for some individuals to find the right care. World Mental Health Day will hopefully help increase awareness where we can live in a world where mental health is promoted, protected, valued, and where everyone can access mental health care. (World Health Organization, n.d.)

All age groups are affected by mental health, and that includes older adults. Older adults also need access to quality care, be surrounded by individuals who promote mental health needs for older adults, and the ability to have access to mental health resources.
