How Can You Care For An Aging Veteran?
– Recognize Veterans as individuals
– Keep a routine/structured schedule
– Listen to their stories
– Reconnect them to a group or community
(Nelson, 2022)
– Help support mental and emotional health: the VA offers mental health care for veterans, mentalhealth.va.gov
– Identify how they can pay for care: the VA can provide housebound care, mortgage life insurance, adapted housing grants, monthly compensation, extended/long term/geriatric care, and aid and attendance, benefits.vs.gov
– Provide the right care for the veteran – they may need care for post traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, wound injury, etc.
